Show Me Three // Wishbone Chair

Portraits of Danish merchants sitting in Chinese Ming-style chairs inspired mid-century furniture designer Hans Wegner in his design of the iconic Wishbone chair. This is why faithfully crafted or inexpensively knocked off, this style works to give a room a combination of Scandinavian minimalism and exotic flair. The bentwood form is sculptural, and the rush-seat offers an interesting textural contrast.

A Wishbone could be a dining chair or an occasional chair, and although I’m showing you wood tones here, colorful versions abound. A set of Wishbone-style bar stools in a white painted finish is at the top of my wishlist this Christmas!

Show Me Three // Lucite Chairs

Whether a room is colorful or has a neutral palette, there may be a place for an acrylic glass piece. Lucite might work in a range of interior styles, but for me it can only be in a small dose, such as a console table or a single chair. Here are three such chairs we found this week – possibilities to pair with a writing table in a serene Master Bedroom retreat.

Lucite Mid

MID // Louis Ghost Armchair // DWR // $450

 Lucite Low

LOW // Vapor Acrylic Chair // CB2 // $179

Since a Lucite chair is sleek and transparent, I like to pair it with something opposite. A fuzzy sheepskin throw…a rustic wood desk…that is my kind of Minimalism.

Scouted // Anthropologie Chairs

I spend a lot of time looking at furniture online, and Anthropologie is one of my favorite sites for eye-catching eclectic pieces. These are a few chairs that I’ve been showing my clients lately.Dining Chair Front

This dining chair at each end of a table as “Captain’s chairs” alongside simple black wood Windsor chairs. They would also be fun away from the table, filling out empty corners in a dining room.Dining Chair Back Big

This low-slung, comfy leather lounge chair, done in an unexpected color.

Show Me 3 // Bone Inlay Chair

These are such versatile chairs, thanks to the intricate detail of bone inlay all over their wood or resin bases. It makes them look eye-catching from every angle. The first one of these examples is based on an English Regency chair, while the second and third are interpretations of Classical Greek klismos chairs. It is easy to picture them bringing some exoticism to a Traditional space, but I think the lightness of their forms and graphic impact of their patterns make them work beautifully in a more Modern interior as well.

I can see a few of these beauties around a simple dining table…or a pair of them opposite a sofa…or a single one in front of a leaning mirror and a plant. It could be so pretty at a dressing table. And doing this post, I’ve realized that the middle one wants to come and live in my bedroom as a desk chair!

Show Me 3 // Tolix Chair

A Tolix chair, also known as a Tabouret chair, is an inexpensive way to add some Industrial Chic to a dining space. In steel, copper or brass, I like them teamed with a rustic wood table for an organic contrast. In one of a multitude of fun powder-coated color finishes, the iconic chair looks great with a range of dining table finishes.PD_15034_MAINHIGH // Marais A Chair // Design Within Reach // $275

In one of my favorite dining spaces I have designed, I gave my client’s grand and beautiful trestle dining table a modern edge with some armchair versions of a Tolix chair. You can take a look at it on my Pinterest.

Show Me 3 // Midcentury Style Armchair

Lord knows my love affair with mid-century style is an enduring one. But even if you’re not especially a fan, what’s not to like about a beautiful walnut wood finish teamed with black upholstery? In a soft leather or a woven blend, one or a pair of these chairs always works in an eclectic interior, and can add a dash of warmth and vintage flair to a starkly contemporary room. Picture yourself swilling a martini, as you lean back in the best one you can afford.

Show Me 3 // Woven Lounge Chair

I am in love with this kind of occasional chair. It is light-weight and a bit organic, with woven details and a Mid-Century Scandinavian vibe. Here is the chair at 3 price points.

MID // Knoll Risom Lounge Chair // AllModern // $1015

LOW // Moda Chair // Urban Outfitters // $559

The graceful lines and eye-catching texture of these pieces make them perfect on their own, but I’d definitely want to try a lumbar pillow with each, to lend it more comfort and warmth. I would use one chair to fill out a corner of a Bedroom or Office, or a pair to balance a tailored but comfy sofa in a Living Room seating arrangement.
